Day 10 - Beach Day and Il Pirata

Day 10 - August 31, 2019

On our second morning in Praiano we started our morning with another breakfast of delicious caprese salad, coffee, and bread that we bought the day before. This time we used burrata cheese instead of the mozzarella. It was super rich and creamy and for me, just what I wanted for breakfast.

After our long walk down to Marina di Praia beach we noticed a dramatic change in the amount of people and the type of people. The beach was packed. It was Saturday now and apparently that's when everyone goes to the beach. The water level was higher so our previous rock spot was not one that was available to us anymore.

We scoured the chairs looking for open spots and found two which were quickly snatched up before we got to them. Then I asked someone who rents one half of the chairs if he had any openings and he said no. He referred me to talk with Carlos who runs the blue chair rentals, which take up the other half of the beach. It's a bit of a weird little racket they have going here. We found Carlos and found two pretty good spots right in the middle of the action and also acquired an umbrella that nobody was using.

We started off the day with some Aperol Spritz cocktails and then went in for a float. Immediately we were overwhelmed by the constant screaming of the large herd of kids that were on the beach that day. They would run and jump on this air mattress that someone brought out to float on. Then they would repeat this process over and over and over. They all seemed to be picking on each other but also ganging up on one little girl and at one point they were throwing rocks at each other. One girl got a handful of sand in the face and then later that girl threw a rock at a little boy's head. I was watching and I saw it as the rock ricocheted off his head and he turned into murder mode and went after that girl. He jumped on top of her head in the water and looked like he was going to drown her. Then some old lady intervened and stopped it. Then I watched the kid run out of the water screaming and crying to his clueless parents on the beach. It was all getting very "Lord of the Flies" out there.

We took some more breaks and had some drinks, pizza and fries. I ordered from the other restaurant just up from where the chairs were. The lady taking my order was kind of rude but the food was good and all the other service was great. We got in some great swim time that day, but decided it was time to go since we could only handle so much of those kids fighting in the water. lol. We started the long hike back up the mountain to our house to freshen up.

We made reservations at Il Pirata which was back down the hill by the marina and swimming beach. After freshening up we made our slow walk back down the hill again. We stopped to take some modeling photos by an old rusty door and crumbling wall. Shabby chic of course.

We were seated at the restaurant with a splendid view of the water and surrounding coast. It was pretty warm this night and we were both sweating from the walk. We quickly ordered a bottle of Omina Romana Chardonnay to help us cool off. (it was delicious AND necessary) Then for dinner we had the following: fried calamari, fried prawns, fresh pasta with mussels, fresh pasta with zucchini, grilled octopus and potato puree. After dinner we made the long, slow, overstuffed belly walk back up the hill again! It was worth it.

That is the end of Day 10.
